Instructions and examples

Here you will find instructions and examples for the most common printing jobs. We think this is a comprehensive list. Please contact us if something you need is missing.

File submission

A digital file submission is always the best option. Grayscales and color images are best represented digitally. We prefer you to submit as a PDF file. This goes for all type of printing jobs. You can e-mail your files to us, or if they are too large, as FTP, CD-disc, USB stick, or a link to LU-Box.

Submitting paper originals

If you do not have a digital file your only option is to submit your paper original. These will be scanned to a computer and then printed. The result is usually OK, but rarely as good as a digital original. It is also more expensive, as we need to charge for the time it takes to scan. After scanning, you can of course get a PDF copy if you so wish.

Offset printing

Offset is a special technique used with special equipment for offset printing. If you want offset-printed covers for your thesis we can do this for you. Then we need all the information that should go on the cover, what format the book or cover should have, and how many pages.

Execution

You can find suggestions and ideas in the menu on this page. Know that we have the tools - just tell us what you want to have done and we might have a good suggestion that will fit your printing requirements! We will perform your printing order as you prefer, if it is at all feasible. Please remember that we have no official requirements for number of copies; we will print any number from one and up!

Logotypes

It is important that you submit materials that have the correct color, design scheme, and logos of Lund University. See the link to the LU graphic profile to the right.

Colors

Different printers interpret color codes differently. We have document templates that fit our printer, so that the colors match the graphic profile. The colors are PMS 1395, PMS 280, and Black.

Time

It is impossible for us to give a general estimate in advance of how much time a printing job will take, as it depends on our current work load, and on the difficulty and size of your order. However, we will of course be able to make a fair estimate at the time you place the order!

Cost

Please contact us for information about the current prices.

Cover

Choose between laser printed or offset.

We need to know what text should go on the cover and how many pages the insert will be (in order to calculate the width of the back). For offset covers we need the template at least 10 working days before nailing day.

Insert

Submit your insert as either pdf or PS. We can then do a test print until you are satisfied.

Nailing

As in nailing your final file! When you tell us to go ahead, we will start the entire print job. From that point it will take at most five working days for us to complete the printing.

Delivery

We can deliver to you be internal university post, personal delivery, or you may come and pick them up yourself. An invoice will be sent after delivery to your department.

Remember

to give us the full invoice details of your department.

Several colorful booklets. Photo.

Booklets, small or medium books, extremely useful. And cheap! Perfect for more encompassing information. Our machines are equipped in order to deliver optimal final products, including new technology that prevents booklets from self-opening.

Format

Max length: 320 mm. Max width: 220 mm.
We recommend: A4 (210x297 mm or A5 (149x210mm).

Binding

Metal ring

Advantages: Sturdy, easy to leaf through, can use any paper type, fast production..
This is what we recommend! Available in black, white, bronze, silver.

Glued with strip (Fastback)

Advantage: fast production.
Disadvantages: Not suitable for papers over 115 g. Requires large inner margin.

Glued with whole cover

Advantage: Sturdy.
Disadvantages: Slow and expensive production. Intended for 200 copies or more. Requires large inner margin.

Stapled back

Advantage: Cheap.
Disadvantages: Special layout requirements (4&1, 2&3). Intended for A4 and A3 folded to A5 or A4 booklets, respectively.

Fill content out to border

This has to be adjusted for in your file. Let the e.g. image continue at least 3 mm outside of the document. When exporting to pdf, choose crop marks and bleed 3 mm in all directions. If you need an exact A4 fit it will become expensive, as we will print on A3 and then cut.

Margins

Put page numbers at a safe distance from the edges. The printer may slip a millimeter in either the vertical or horizontal axis. Avoid putting an image that stretches over an entire fold.

Examples of cards and booklets in color print. Photo.

Our color machine is one of very few in the world that passes a special test for color printers. The test is about making exact copies, something our machine can do over 1000 times in a row. Suggestions: Flyers, overhead images, invitation cards, pamphlets, diplomas, postcards, etc.

Two large colorful flyers. Photo.

This is yet another way of using the color printer, in this case in the A3-format. This is an established and effective way to spread information. Only your imagination limits how nice your flyer will look!

Poster printer at work, printing a poster. Photo.

Posters are color prints on a gigantic sheet of paper. We use a so called "plotter", or large format printer. It is an inkjet printer that prints on paper up to 100 cm wide. The paper is on a roll, and your poster can thus become fairly long...We print posters at a resolution of 600 dpi.

For best results we prefer submissions in pdf, created with e.g. Adobe InDesign. We can also use a PowerPoint file, but we do not recommend it.

Laminating machine. Photo.

We can laminate everything from business cards to sheets of maximum 100 cm width. You can choose between matte and glossy lamination. To laminate a posted not only improves its quality and appearance, it also protects it.

NEW- KAPA-mount

We can now also offer mounting the poster on a KAPA-board, which gives robust stability to the poster.

Business card presented by man wearing a suit. Photo.

Business cards are very useful for presenting your contact information to people you encounter on e.g. a conference. We can offer printing of business cards of any size. There is no price difference based on color scheme. Minimum order: 200.

Standard format

Our standard business card format is 90 mm x 55 mm.

Special formats

We can cut business cards to any other format manually, at a slightly higher price.
